Massage Treatments

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes on the contracted areas. It is an intensive massage designed to reach deeper muscle. Both corrective and therapeutic, it is beneficial for many physical problems, including sports injuries and chronic pain.

Deep Tissue Massage is suitable for active and inactive people and for those with poor posture or who suffer from stress as well as repetitive strain.

Whether you’ve overdone it at the gym or work long hours at a computer, this treatment will help to improve your flexibility and free your body from tension.

Sports Massage

Overuse of the muscles, whether due to sporting activity, poor posture or any repetitive strain causes muscle fibres to become tangled and misaligned. Sports massage is geared toward athletes of every kind, from world-class professionals to weekend joggers looking to maintain range of motion, suppleness and flexibility of soft muscle tissues and joints. It is vital for injury prevention and to enhance sporting performance. Sports Massage is also great for treating chronic (longstanding) problems or acute injuries such as muscle spasm or strain and reducing swelling or discomfort caused by exercising and in sport.

Many injuries are brought about by overusing certain muscles. This can result in soreness, pain and inflammation. Regularly scheduled sports massages can help reduce the likelihood of the muscles becoming overused in the first place and can also help reduce the initial inflammation that leads to injury.

Massage before an event will stimulate circulation, calm nervous tension and create a state of readiness in the muscles to maximise your performance while reducing the risk of injury.

For everyone, Sports Massage can reduce muscular tension, enhance circulation and promote relaxation and well-being.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is one of the most common types of massage in Western Europe. It combines various hands-on techniques to break up muscle knots known as adhesions.

This calming and restorative treatment aids relaxation and melts away stress from the body and mind. This is an excellent choice to relieve muscular aches and pains brought about by your daily routine. Using classic, therapeutic techniques, this soothes away aches and pains whilst at the same time providing a deeply relaxing experience. Swedish massage can include a back massage, neck massage, shoulder massage, legs, feet, arms, hands, face and scalp, or any combination.

Whether you are looking for an idea to incentivise your team, want an experiential thank you gift or simply want to maintain work wellbeing and morale, an office massage can be just the ticket.

Your Treatment Room is an affordably priced 15-20 minute fully clothed stress-busting treatment. A quiet space / room for an on -site massage chair is all that is needed to help relieve any tension on those stressed “work-at-desk-all-day”

If space is an issue then we can also offer shoulder and neck massages at employees desks too!

Seated Acupressure

Seated Acupressure Massage is given through the clothes on a specially designed, fully supportive chair and is ideal for those not yet familiar with massage.

The treatment involves work on the head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands and back using a combination of massage, acupressure and stretching techniques using fingertips, knuckles, thumbs, elbows and forearms, tailored to your needs and with no oils and no need to undress. Seated Acupressure Massage is ideal for people who would prefer not to or are unable to lie on a massage table. Seated Acupressure Massage feels good, easing away tension and stresses that build up in the body, leaving the recipient calm, energised and alert.

Benefits include:
Anxiety
Asthma
Back Pain
Neck pain
Shoulder pain
Eyestrain
Fatigue
Headaches
Insomnia
Irritability
Migraines
RSI
(repetitive strain injury)
Sinus problems
Toothache

Myofascial Release

Myo = muscle
Fascia = the main connective tissue in the body
Release = to let go, ease pressure

MFR is a non-invasive, gentle hands-on soft tissue technique that works on the fascia to release restrictions in the body. Tight fascia can cause general undiagnosed pain and tightness in the body becoming restricted and less fluid than it should be and cause limitations in range of movement.
Fascia is a web of connective tissue that runs throughout the entire body connecting everything in place, sometimes in a fine web and in places in thicker bands.

MFR techniques are firm, but very gentle, and feel good to receive. It can be used as a specific stand-alone treatment, or incorporated into other massage treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during my first massage treatment

Your massage therapist will expect  you to fill out a health history form and ask you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed and to determine if massage is appropriate for you.

Why does a massage therapist ask about my medical history and medications?

A responsible massage therapist asks about your medical history, it is not appropriate for people with some medical conditions and sometimes must be used cautiously.  For example, massage is not recommended if you have an infection (including cold or flu), other conditions that affect circulation, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, require caution, depending on your overall physical condition.

Medications, particularly pain-killers and muscle relaxants (including aspirin), dull your perception of pain and pressure—your massage therapist needs to know your perception may not be accurate to avoid inadvertently using too much pressure.

What do I need to wear?

With some exceptions, we generally ask you to remove all clothing except underwear. Your massage therapist will give you privacy to undress and any areas that are not being massaged at any time will be carefully draped with towels to maintain modesty and warmth.  However, if you feel more comfortable keeping on more clothing, we can certainly work with you to accommodate that. Some styles of massage are performed fully clothed, for example Thai Table Massage and Seated Acupressure Massage.

How will I feel after the massage treatment?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling relaxed people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity. The massage may unsettle your emotions too, which may make you feel different.

Will I feel sore after treatment?

If you have had a deep massage then you may experience some tenderness in the areas focused on. This is just like the discomfort that may be felt after exercising.

How long do the effects of massage last and how regularly should I have one?

The duration of the effects of a massage vary greatly from person to person depending on their physical and mental condition, activities, ability to relax, and ability to heal. If you are receiving massage  to help heal injury or to get rid of chronic pain, you usually need to receive weekly massage until you reach that goal. If you are receiving massage for prevention, health maintenance, or just to feel better, you have more choice in how often you receive massage. The effects of regular massage are cumulative. A massage every week or two can make a big difference in your overall health and tension levels. Even a monthly massage is beneficial.

I was recommended by a physiotherapist to consider having massage treatment as I have suffered from severe neck problems for thirty years. I was fortunate to be recommended to Martine for neck and back massage, Martine understood my problems from the outset and for the past 13 years I have had regular massage treatments from her helping considerably in givng me relief from a very painful/stiff neck. I have great faith in Martine`s abilities, she is very helpful, kind and considerate and I always look forward to my therapy sessions with her.

Paula

I first came to Martine about 10 years ago for chronic neck and back problems after having numerous surgeries. During my sessions, I find that Martine is a most caring and attentive therapist. She has a touch that is both subtle and yet very effective. Her hands are just magic! She has most intuitive feeling for the body and this results in a wonderfully relaxing hour! Seeing Martine has enabled me to maintain and manage my condition and I thoroughly look forward to my treatments!

Sharon Barget

I have been a client of Martine for several years at The Disability Foundation. As well as treating a wide range of clients in her private practice, Martine helps disabled people at this charity, based at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital , Stanmore.

Martine is an exceptional therapist. At first, I would tell her of any special aches and pains. However, I soon noticed this was unnecessary. Martine would tell me, by detecting tense muscles, where my latest problems were. And then, these problems were given special priority. My mobility is always improved, and I feel greatly refreshed.

Dr Jeffrey M Graham

I have had a few back, neck & shoulder massages with Martine and find it really helps with knots that I get in my shoulders, stiff neck and headaches. I always feel so much better afterwards.

Martine was very accommodating with my requirements too. I prefer to use the chair for the back.
Highly recommend!

Claire

Since I started seeing Martine a few years ago, sessions have benefited me significantly in reducing pain and stress from a long term back condition.

Martin, Middlesex

She has a natural ability to make you feel cared for and a sympathetic ear to help relieve mental as well as physical stress. I always leave feeling relaxed and refreshed. I feel very lucky to have found such a warm, friendly, efficient therapist who I consider a friend.

I have been receiving massage treatments from Martine for almost 6 years now. She is always professional and friendly and has a special way of understanding exactly what you need during your treatment. There have been times when I have come to her with a cold and she has given me a face massage to help with my sinuses or when she adapted her technique when I was pregnant to accommodate my bump and help my tired legs.

Nina Keogh

I have been seeing Martine for a massage almost every month since 2013. Initially came with the back pain after having a baby, I realised that regular massage sessions are essential in maintaining healthy body, especially for office workers spending most of their work day in front of the computer. I would highly recommend Martine to anyone who is looking for a solution for eliminating back/neck pain, reducing stress and improving overall healthy lifestyle.

Irina Grewal

My sports massage with Martine every 6 weeks is now an essential part of my life. As a 50 something, and keen runner and cyclist I was plagued by pulled muscles and various aches and pains. Since receiving regular treatment from Martine I have not had any muscular problems, my fitness has increased and I now go out to exercise with full confidence. For anyone wanting to keep fit that refuses to be limited by age, a regular treatment with Martine will be the best money you ever spend. "

Julian Hubble

I'm very happy with Martine's massage. She's a professional and that reflects in her work. I'm suffering with muscular skeletal issues and she's always been able to give me the right treatment. I highly recommend her.

Sophia V

"As a frequent gym-goer, my muscles tense up over heavy workout. That's why I always look forward to my fortnightly appointment with Martine. She is professional and friendly, always there to help. The treatment is effective and tailored to individual needs. I would recommend her treatment to everyone without hesitation."

Mali, Borehamwood

I'm delighted to recommend Martine. I've been going to her for several years on a fairly regular basis to try to keep my shoulders and neck from completely seizing up. She is professional, calming and has worked wonders at my back neck and shoulders. Just the right amount of pressure to deal with the knots and still feel supremely relaxed afterwards! Following an operation for a torn rotator cuff as a result of a slip on the winter ice I have had to take a break over the last couple of months but have now booked my first appointment back with her. I have total confidence that she will take care with the repaired shoulder but will also help me to achieve greater mobility and flexibility in that shoulder than I would be able to manage by simply doing exercises by myself.

Nicky Snook, Greenwich

Martine alleviates the aches and pains in my neck and back when I visit for my monthly massage which I have been doing for nearly 15 years. In all that time she has been most professional and restores my wellbeing. I would certainly recommend her.

She is very professional & yet pleasant as her knowledge of various massaging techniques is vast.
She is popular & much respected by the clients whom I know.

Sanjay Pal, Harrow

Martine's therapeutic input was immensely helpful in every respect. I benefited greatly from her therapy. Her practice is conducted with utmost professionalism, taking into account clients' needs. I highly recommend her as a complementary therapist based on my experience.

Catherine, Herts

I had a full body massage with Martine once a month for many years through the company I worked for. I've had some issues with my lower back, neck and shoulders over the years and having mentioned these problems to Martine she concentrated on these areas to keep the problems at bay. She is very professional and personable and now I've retired I miss the massages and her friendly nature. Would highly recommend Martine and wish I lived closer as I'd continue to be massaged by her.

Sue Phillips, Staines

I have been treated by Martine for well over a year. She gives me a combination of Swedish massage with a deep tissue massage which eases the tight muscles in my shoulders and lower back. I go every month or so and it helps me by keeping me pain free most of the time.
